Public sector workforce changes put grad recruitment in the spotlight

Recruitment companies that work with the Australian Public Service must shift their approach in light of new statistics showing a big increase in both age-related retirements and graduate hiring, warns talent management tech firm, Acendre.

Age-related retirements rose 17% during the 2015 financial year, while graduates accounted for more than 40% of hires, shows the APS Statistical Bulletin.

Acendre Asia-Pacific managing director Karen Evans said now that the hiring freeze is over, the APS must tackle the problem of its ageing workforce.

We expect graduate recruitment programs to continue to be a key focus for many APS agencies. Recruiters would be wise to present agencies with a recruitment strategy aimed at nurturing the next generation of APS talent. Work closely with the heads of APS agencies you serve to understand what makes the best graduate candidates,” she told Shortlist.

Graduate recruitment is high volume and has to be started and completed within a certain timeframe. With the end of the academic year just around the corner, the APS and supplier market that supports it will need resources and technology solutions in place to manage this intensive hiring process.
